Baking. Do you and your mum like to put pinnies on and pretend you’re Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry? (Us, too). If so, Bread Ahead might have the perfect Mother’s Day activity for you. They’re running Mothering Sunday-themed workshops in both their Pavilion Road and Borough Market branches on 31 March.

In this three-hour baking extravaganza, you’ll learn how to whip up the traditional Overnight White Tin Loaf, delicious Devonshire splits (bursting with cream and jam – yum), and a decadent, fruity Bara Brith loaf. If you’re more of a baking enthusiast than expert, never fear: their skilled tutors will be on hand to ensure your loaves rise to the occasion.

Flower arranging. Want to get your mum some flowers but not sure what she’ll like? Why not work together and create the ideal bouquet? If that appeals, Aspinal of London are hosting an afternoon tea and flower-arranging workshop during the afternoon of the 31. The event is being held in collaboration with fancy florist Bloom & Wild – so you know the flowers will be top-notch – and the ticket cost can be redeemed against any Aspinal products that are purchased during the class.

Candle making. For a truly unique experience, head over to the Penguin Classics pop-up store in Shoreditch, where you and your mum can craft your very own literary-themed candle. Hosted by Literati and Light, at this event you can choose between a _Wuthering Heights-Pride and Prejudice_themed candle or a -inspired craft. Intriguing!

Brunch with a twist. Mother’s Day brunch is a classic – but when it comes in the form of a seven course tasting menu, it’s too good to miss! Inspired by the season – and, in particular, the iconic cherry blossoms that bloom in Japan at this time of year – Chotto Matte’s gorgeously pink-themed brunch promises a feast for all the senses. With a delectable menu featuring Hamachi Sashimi and Raindrop Jelly with Cherry Ripple Ice cream, plus unlimited Laurent Perrier champagne, there’s no better way to treat the most special lady in your life. Floral afternoon tea. The prestigious Dominque Ansel bakery (which was founded by the inventor of the world-famous Cronut, don’t you know) is celebrating Mother’s Day by laying on a very special afternoon tea. Inspired by ‘the path of a blooming flower’, the tea includes sweet and savoury treats, as well as a bouquet of daffodils and some sumptuous vanilla and strawberry macarons to take home. The tea runs from Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 March only, with seatings at 2 pm and 4:15 pm. Reservations are essential.

Tasty treatments. If your mum is a glamourpuss or simply loves to be pampered, check out the pop-up beauty event at Vividly Chic: a cute boutique in London’s trendy East End. Attendees will be treated to some delicious finger foods, including cakes, sandwiches and tea, whilst enjoying 10% off a range of beauty treatments (from lashes and brows to massages and manicures).

Spring at Kew. If you and your mother share a passion for the great outdoors, there’s no better place to be than London’s lush Kew Gardens. There’s so much to do and see at this glorious time of year: why not hop on the internal train (just £5 for adults) and see a different side to Kew, whilst you learn about Kew’s amazing history, architecture and gardens? Alternatively, you could take your mother on a leisurely stroll through the grounds and witness the many different flowers and plants that burst into blossom during spring.

A ramble at Rainham. If you’ve never been to Rainham Marshes – a nature reserve just outside of London – now is your chance. Home to some amazing wildlife, this secret oasis is full of glorious flora and fauna just waiting to be explored. Once you’ve had a good ramble, take a load off at the charming café (high tea will be served between 1 and 4 pm, in case you’re feeling peckish). Mums will be granted free entry to the reserve on Mother’s Day, which is an extra bonus!

See the city through new eyes. If your mum happens to be a frequent visitor to London, you might think there’s not much left with which to surprise her. Happily, you’re wrong! The London Transport Museum’s Hidden London tour is a brilliant activity for both London aficionados and newcomers to the city. On the tour, you’ll uncover hidden tunnels, secret stations, and a number of other mysterious locations. Take a thrilling trip into the unknown with your mum this Mother’s Day and discover a rarely-seen side of the capital together.
