Brixton Oasis

At UnderTheDoormat we offer guests the ability to stay in carefully-selected, stylish homes with the professional service of hotel.

Located in a vibrant and urban area just 2 minutes walk from Brixton Tube and overlooking the town hall and famous Ritzy Cinema park, this spacious 3 double bedroom colourful home features a wonderful terraced back garden, perfect for relaxing. A former British consultant-turned-entrepreneur and an American doctor who met in Moscow 20 years ago have found in London their home – ideally located half way between America and Asia. Their charming home is a reflection of their character and personality, incorporating elements from their Sri-Lankan tea farm to travel books to antique furniture and treasures.

The three-floor apartment feels truly like a home with the colourful dining room and airy kitchen downstairs and three spacious double bedrooms on upstairs levels. Simon and John have lived in Russia and in the US fell in love with Sri-Lanka’s endless beaches and tea plantations, where they produce and export their own flavoured tea (you can find Plucky in Fortnum and Mason!). Auctioned vintage furniture and Sri Lankan ethnic touches make their Brixton home an inviting place to stay and an amazing base to explore London.

Brixton is an up and come urban oasis in London. With the UK’s best private market (Brixton Village) it has loads of independent cafe’s and restaurants, the famous Ritzy cinema is a must and the O2 Brixton Academy plays host to some of the best bands in the world. This eclectic neighbourhood has so much life on its on – a true place to live like a local! And it is a short tube journey to anywhere else you would like to visit! Brixton tube (Victoria line) is literally 2 minutes walk from the flat and is 4 stops (6 minutes) to Victoria station and 10 minutes to Oxford Circus. There are also busses outside going direct to everywhere from South Kensington to Trafalgar square.

Reviews

  1. Beautiful home that suited our purposes well. Unfortunately the location is noisy so you have to be prepared for early morning start. Otherwise the location next to a tube station is handy.

  2. This apartment is a great size and has a really lovely outdoor terrace area. Clean and nicely decorated. Very quick easy access to underground and buses - only issue was that it's slightly noisy if you want to open the windows with lots of hustle and bustle from the high street below. However, if you don't mind that - it was a really homely and well kitted out place to stay with lots of nearby restaurants and bars as well.

  3. The hosts were very responsive before and during the stay. The neighborhood was fantastic with good restaurants and nice people! In all the shops and restaurants we felt truly welcomed. The apartment was near a very busy corner with posted warnings of pick-pickets (similar to any other major city), but we never felt unsafe walking around. We loved Pop Brixton... the markets/shops, the easy access to the tube, the Ritzy Theater across the street (after a long day of exploring, it was nice to walk across the street and watch a movie in the beautiful old, renovated theater). We found a great Indian Restaurant to deliver a delicious meal later one evening when we had had a full day and just wanted to be back in the apartment relaxing. The apartment was so thoughtfully decorated: simple, unique, tasteful, and full of great books and art. Even though we arrived a few days after Christmas, it was nice to have 2 fresh, decorated Christmas trees inside and on the patio, with lights and all! It was so warm and comfortable, we loved just hanging out in the apartment. Beds were so comfortable too. We loved the neighbors we met coming and going. We loved the 3 chickens in the yard! We will definitely come back and stay here again. Maybe in the fall or spring, so we could enjoy the beautiful patio! Besides the great apartment, we were so happy to be in Brixton! We felt we were surrounded by Londoners, not tourists.

  4. This is a true home, and you'll surely get that live like a local feeling. Steps away from anything you would need. The Tube station is truly around the corner and you have multiple groceries to choose from. The neighborhood and many of the Brixton Market restaurants stay open late, so this is the spot for the night owl. The 3rd floor bedroom faces a bustling street (so bring earplugs for the weekends) while the 2nd floor bedroom facing the courtyard is super quiet. The place was just as pictured - super clean but also really warm and cozy from all the personal design attention and artwork. The staff at Under the Doormat made the whole process simple, even working with us to arrange an early check-in. We'll be back to both Under the Doormat and this beautiful property.
