There are loads of small and independent venues in west London, each with a different speciality. L’appetit Fou in Turnham Green offers special large-scale slabs that weigh up to 3kg; Melt Chocolates in Holland Park has a range of hampers that allow you to prepare and bake your own creations at home; while Leonidas in Kensington hails from the continent, having been appointed to the royal court of Belgium.

Certainly winning the award for the best-named shop, in bustling Soho you can find the renowned Choccywoccydoodah, particularly known for its elaborately decorated cakes. If you find yourself on a weekend away from the capital and in need of a familiar treat, there’s also a branch in Brighton. Going even further upmarket, Prestat in Mayfair pay almost as much attention to their gorgeous boxes as the treats inside.

South London

East London

Chocolate brings memories of childhood: of staring at wonderfully curated shop windows bursting with sweets and hampers, or watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and wishing you could be transported into that magical world. Fortunately, Rococo in Chelsea have a series of Roald Dahl inspired treats to bring it all back. Even more adorable are the toy-sized shapes made by De Rosier in Southfields, which include sports goods such as tennis rackets and golf balls, as well as more conventional eggs.

This part of the city is not as developed (chocolate-wise) as the West End, but there’s still a quirky niche filled by delights such as Montezuma’s

in Spitalfields. Not only do they offer chocolate beer (it works, strangely) but also 100% cocoa bars. One for the brave…
